St Christopher’s School, Kingdom of Bahrain

St Christopher’s School opened in 1961 in the church compound in Manama, the capital of Bahrain.  Since then it has grown from 39 students to over 2250 students, aged from 3 – 18, from 70 countries. The Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) is one of the largest amongst British Schools Overseas, with nearly 300 students enrolled.  800 children of British families working in Bahrain are enrolled as are 400 Bahrainis.

The School is led by Principal / CEO, Ed Goodwin, OBE: he leads a team of Heads of Infants, Juniors and Seniors (names and contact details can be found in the Other Contacts section of this page).

St Christopher’s operates under three, core elements: Caring, Learning and Communicating, and these are reflected in the wonderful culture, remarked upon by all who learn and work here. It is a dynamic place to be and we never rest on our laurels: this is best summed up by the phrase, “our restless search for excellence”.  We seek to develop the tri-partite St Christopher’s Student – an autonomous learner, a competent individual and a global citizen; who cares about the world and its people, even those beyond his or her direct experience.

The National Curriculum of England forms the basis for teaching and learning, leading to a range of GCSEs and IGCSEs.  In the sixth form, students choose between highly successful A-level and International Baccaluareate (IB) programmes. Results are excellent and students go on to the best universities in the world, including, amongst many others, Oxford, Cambridge, other Russell Group universities, Harvard, MIT and Stanford.

The school was rated as “Outstanding” under British Overseas Schools regulations in 2012 and 2015; indeed, the Outstanding rating was given to every aspect of the school’s operation. The first visit was quality assured, onsite, by John Coleman (HMI)It was also rated as Outstanding in every category, in Bahrain government, Ofsted-style inspections, also in 2012 and 2015. St Christopher’s is an accredited member of British Schools in the Middle East (BSME).

Teachers stay an average of close to seven years and, each year, many who have moved on to other countries, apply to return to St Chris – a fact that we regard as a testament for what a fine place it is to teach!
